    • Homework:  Conscience and Forgiveness
    • Sue [from group email]: While Bruce was describing soul and spirit to us, and also responding to some of Mickorod's comments on conscience and the sense in which the "soul pays", I started to think about forgiveness as possible theme? ... the practice or exercise of forgiveness to help with the conscience / right and wrong part ...
    • From Zen: Is conscience innate to humans and animals as an evolutionary characteristic that helps us survive? Or is it a God -given faculty that helps us distinguish right from wrong? Are people born without such a characteristic i.e. sociopaths morally culpable? Or is conscience something indoctrinated in us by society and religions? Should we use our powers of moral reasoning instead, and reject any indoctrination by authority? Dietrich Bonhoeffer said "that conscience for him was more than practical reason, indeed it came from a "depth which lies beyond a man's own will and his own reason and it makes itself heard as the call of human existence to unity with itself."
